Vacation TODO: Day 9
Today was the final day of my vacation. It wasn't as fully productive as I'd envisioned, but I'll take it. Two items got fully crossed off the list today. The first is #16, dining room speakers. Earlier in the week I ordered the speakers, and they arrived Read More...
Vacation TODO: Day 8
The drawer's are 95% done. The boxes are all built and sanded, and four of them are installed and operating, sans drawer fronts. I need more drawer slides and I'm going to order them from an online supplier tonight or tomorrow. This morning Trissa, Atticus, Read More...
Vacation TODO: Day 7
Today was the least productive day so far. It's about 6pm and I haven't yet gone into the shop. I doubt I will make it. All's not lost. As I write, Trissa is working on list item #7, "3 interior doors". This morning we set up a second set of sawhorses Read More...
Happy Thanksgiving!
The rain has stopped and we're ready to head to my sister's house for Thanksgiving. The oven worked great- here's the pecan pie we're bringing along: And here's a picture of my two boys reading on the couch (Fine Homebuilding and Fine Woodworking) The Read More...
Vacation TODO: Day 6
Scratch another item off the list! Today I slept in until a leisurely 7:30. Over coffee I decided I needed to accomplish at least one full list item, and the lowest hanging fruit was #17: Cat door platform. Allow me to explain. When we got our cats a Read More...
Vacation TODO: Day 5
Today was the fifth day and midpoint of my 9 consecutive days off from work. I'm tired from working 10 hours a day in the shop, but tomorrow is Thanksgiving and I'll only work a half day. I need to regroup a bit as well as it is apparent that I wont be Read More...
Vacation TODO: Day 4
The cabinet doors are DONE! Trissa says I can cross them off my list! I was up again at my usual 6:20 and saw Atticus and Trissa out the door by 7. My plan for the morning was to pick up where I left off last night, then to focus on installing all of Read More...
Chandelier Help!
One of the items on my vacation TODO: list is to "choose, purchase, install" the dining room chandelier. Sensing that I might need some help with this, my sister in law (who is an interior designer with impecable taste) sent me a note saying that one Read More...
Vacation TODO: Day 3
I woke up at my usual time this morning, as if I were going to work. I was going to work, but not downtown - down in the basement. Once I got Trissa and Atticus out the door and on their way to daycare and school I sat down for a brief planning session Read More...
Vacation TODO: Day 2
I woke up this morning feeling pretty under the weather. So much so that I went back to bed and didn't get up until 11. I didn't much feel like working on the house, but sometime after lunch I forced myself into the shop to work on cabinet doors. Last Read More...
Vacation TODO: Day 1
Day 1 was productive but not overly so. I didn't venture into the shop to work on cabinets because I feared that would take too much of my attention away from Atticus and Trissa. Most likely I'll start on the doors and drawers on Monday when they're at Read More...
Vacation TODO:
As of 4:30 today I am officially on vacation until the 27th of November! This is my second week-long vacation in 2 months and I'm happy to have it - Atticus isn't getting any LESS-mobile, and our house needs to be child-proofed. In our case this primarily Read More...
Bring out the sandpaper
We're staying in town for Thanksgiving next week & my mind is beginning to wander. What will we be able to accomplish? I'm hoping to take out the sandpaper and varnish and finish the face frames of the cabinets. That way, when Nick's finished building Read More...
Oven and Microwave Temporarily Installed!
Trissa got home in the late afternoon yesterday and was excited to hear about Atticus's and my excursion to the appliance sale. I could tell she wanted her appliances installed sooner than later, so around 4pm I took the van back to the sale and picked them up. I carried the microwave up the 33 steps myself last night, but the 250lb oven would have to wait until today. We cooked ham in the microwave last night using the convection feature, and bacon this morning (wow, do we eat that much pork?). It seems to work fine, but I think I'll probably stick to using the microwave-only feature. Read More...
Appliance Sale! (Or, "Places not to take a stroller.")
One of the major appliance retailers in Seattle is Albert Lee, and this weekend is their annual warehouse sale. I'd never been to this event before, but my sister-in-law called me up the other night and said I should go. Trissa had a funeral to attend Read More...
Upstairs Bath Finished Product - Almost.
I realized this weekend that we never posted any photos of the upstairs bath that we renovated in earnst last January. I realized because I found myself snapping a photo of the (almost) finished product to send off to someone at HGTV who had posted in Read More...
Sawstop, Part 2
It’s been a few weeks since the new Sawstop arrived at Pigeon Point. As I detailed in my first post , it was a dramatic entrance complete with a military vehicle driving up my sidewalk and Crisco-greased 4x4 skids to slide the 640lb saw from the truck Read More...
Why cabinets are so expensive
I've always been blown away by how expensive cabinets are and now I truly understand why. Nick and his dad, Phil, have spent two full weeks on our cabinets so far and Nick has spent extra time in between working on them. I absolutely love them so far, Read More...
All New Pigeon Point Project!
Instead of working on kitchen cabinet doors today (as was planned), I spent most of the day babysitting (Trissa says its "parenting" when it's your own kid) and working on the website. We have a new look! It's easier to find and read older posts now, Read More...
Really Cool Coat Closet
When I bought our house it had a large foyer but no closet for hanging coats. The previous owners had installed a couple of generic hooks, but that was it. For me, one of the desirable features of our first-floor remodel was a coat closet, and I worked Read More...
